What is cannabis?

Cannabis is a drug that comes from the cannabis or hemp plant. It’s the most widely used illegal drug in the world, and also here in Northern Ireland.

You may have heard people talk about marijuana, dope, pot, blow, hash, black, grass, draw, ganja, spliff, joints, skunk, smoke or weed. These are all just different names for cannabis.

Cannabis is a hallucinogenic drug. That means it affects your brain and can make you see things that aren't really there. Its main active ingredient is a chemical substance called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, shortened to THC. (No wonder!)
